Abstract

(BoRs) hmax= C• N’(1) where Rs is the source radius, Bo is the buoyancy flux per unit area, N is the background buoyancy frequency, and C1• 4.6 is an empirical constant. This result was explained by using a phenomenological model based on the assumption that h max is determined by a balance between the total buoyancy flux de-livered by the source (-BoRs 2)and the buoyancy flux removed laterally (“• N3h3Rs) from the convective region by eddies that develop at the rim of the convecting region due to baroclinic instabilities.
