Dr. Stefan Thiele, a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering’s Polz Lab, recently journeyed to Antarctica near Discovery Bay. Here, he studied shifts in marine Antarctic microbial community in response to deglaciation and ice melting. This involved looking at the uptake of nitrate, nitrite, and ammonia by the bacterial and archaeal community.

While he and others were there for research purposes, they didn’t forget to indulge in a bit of fun with the “Antarctic Olympics” and a bit of culture with some neighboring penguins.
