Undergraduate Opportunities at MIT
Here is a sampling of the oceans-related undergraduate opportunities available across the Institute listed by department:
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE)
Course 1-C / SB in Environmental Engineering Science
Course 1-A / SB in Civil and Environmental Engineering
Students investigate solutions to some of the most pressing problems of our world, including public infrastructure renewal, clean drinking water, environmental remediation, and sustainable solutions to energy needs. Course 1 undergraduate programs prepare students to face these challenges by providing a sound education in math, physics, and science and engineering fundamentals.
Department of Mechanical Engineering (MechE)
Course 2-OE / SB Degree in Mechanical and Ocean Engineering
This program is intended for students who are interested in combining a firm foundation in mechanical engineering with a specialization in ocean engineering. The program includes engineering aspects of the ocean sciences, ocean exploration, and utilization of the oceans for transportation, defense, and extracting resources.

Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences (EAPS)
Program in Atmospheres, Oceans, and Climate (PAOC)
Course 12/ SB in Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences
PAOC offers a major and minor program in Atmospheres, Oceans, and Climate. Joint majors with other departments are also encouraged.
Course 12 Double Major
Studies in physics, chemistry, biology, applied mathematics, and electrical or civil engineering are directly relevant preparation for work in earth, atmospheric, and planetary sciences. Students from these departments can arrange a program of study in Course 12 leading to a second major in one of the department’s areas of concentration.
Five-Year Program
Students with strong academic records from the departments of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences; Chemistry; Physics; Mathematics; Civil and Environmental Engineering; Electrical Engineering and Computer Science; and Chemical Engineering have the opportunity to complete a Master of Science in Earth and Planetary Sciences, in Atmospheric Sciences, or in Ocean Sciences in one year of additional study. Students may receive the Bachelor of Science as soon as the requirements are completed or may elect to defer the award for simultaneous presentation with the Master of Science.

Center for Global Change Science
Interdisciplinary Study
The MIT Center for Global Change Science (CGCS) seeks to better understand the natural mechanisms in ocean, atmosphere, and land systems that together control the Earth’s climate, and to apply improved knowledge to problems associated with predicting climate change. CGCS fosters cooperative efforts among faculty, students, and research scientists in meteorology, oceanography, hydrology, atmospheric sciences, climate physics, chemistry, biology, ecology, and satellite remote sensing. Participants are drawn primarily from the departments of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences; Civil and Environmental Engineering; Biology; and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.
