Modes of Climate Variability

I have a longstanding interest in extra-tropical atmospheric ‘modes of variability’ and their influence on, and possible modification by, ocean circulation:

  • the interaction of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) with ocean circulation: [48, 51, 52, 54, 55, 56, 58, 61, 64, 88, 92 & 131] – this subject is comprehensively reviewed in  [59].
  • the driving of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current by the Southern Annular Mode (SAM): [85, 101, 103, 105 & 122]

I am also interested in:

  • quantifying predictability horizons of the coupled atmosphere, ocean, ice system: [51],
  • mechanisms of decadal MOC variability: [131].
